Kitchen Faucets for Every Style

Between food preparation and general clean up tasks, the kitchen is one of the most popular rooms in a house, as well as where people spend a lot of time every day. Everyone wants their kitchen to be functional, meet the needs of the household, and to also look good. There are countless combinations of styles and designs to meet your needs, so it’s good to be aware of the different options available to choose from.

Before Selecting a Faucet

When choosing a kitchen faucet, it’s important to keep in mind the sink your faucet will be installed in. Sinks often come with one or more pre-drilled holes to accommodate fixtures and accessories. The majority of new faucets take up just one hole, so how do you make a single-hole faucet work in a three-hole sink? Many single-hole faucets can be paired with escutcheon plates to cover up the extra holes in the sink. Escutcheon plates are sometimes included with the faucet, or may be purchased separately. Another option is to purchase a faucet with a separate side spray and fill the remaining hole with a soap dispenser. Sink hole covers are also available in a variety of finishes.

Another consideration in your search is the location of the faucet. Faucets can be wall mounted, meaning installed in the wall above the sink or countertop, to clear up counter working space. The more common style are deck mounted faucets, which are connected to the countertop or the sink edge, otherwise known as the deck.

Faucet Styles

Different faucets are capable of performing different tasks around your kitchen sink. Make sure to find the one that fits your needs as well as your style.

Pull Down Faucets – Pull down faucets generally have a high, arched neck, described as a gooseneck, and the spout points directly down into the sink basin, making it ideal for filling pots or washing cookware. The faucet head is attached to a short spray hose, which can be pulled down to allow the faucet head to work as a sprayer head and angled in different directions.

Pull Out Faucets – Pull out faucets have a more gradual angle to the base, and the spout is shorter, pointed upward rather than into the sink. The faucet head is attached to a longer hose and pulls outward for a wider range of movement to more easily cover all parts of the kitchen sink.

Bar Faucets – Designed to be used with smaller, narrower sinks, bar faucets (or prep faucets) have a more condensed body size and a narrow valve layout. They usually have a high gooseneck, intended for filling or rinsing glasses or vases, etc.

Pot Fillers – Pot filler faucets are usually mounted to the wall above the stove. They have a hinged, articulated neck that allows the faucet to reach out further over the sink for use, and then folded back against the wall to be stored out of the way. They can pour more gallons per minute than a regular kitchen faucet.

Water Dispensers – Water dispensers are small, single-hole set faucets that connect to water filters to dispense purified cold or hot water. They are specifically designed for filling drinking glasses, one at a time.

Pre-Rinse Kitchen Faucets – Pre-Rinse faucets are a high-arched, high-pressure spray nozzle attached to a coil-guided spray hose and anchored to the spout by a support bar. They are also known as restaurant style, or commercial, faucets and are useful for removing food debris from plates before washing.

Bridge Faucets – The traditional style bridge faucet sports a connecting pipe between hot and cold inlets that blends the water before it is sent to the spout and faucet. They usually require two or three holes in the countertop and offer a classic, trendy design.

Single Handle Faucets – The minimalist, single-hole design of a single handle faucet makes for quick and easy operation in a variety of styles and features.

Faucet Features to Look For

Modern advancements in kitchen design have resulted in new technologies for the kitchen faucet, while some available features have been around for years. They’re designed for your convenience, so look for the options that you think will be most useful for your household and budget needs.

Touch/Touchless Kitchen Faucets – Bringing hands-free technology into the kitchen, faucets equipped for touch or touchless operation rely on sensors to turn the water on and off based on hand movements, rather than on handles or levers attached to the spout body.

Kitchen Faucets with Sidespray – Some faucets are available with matching side sprays in the same style and design as the faucet itself.

Magnetic docking – For pull down or pull out faucets, magnetic docking allows the faucet head to magnetically mount to the spout, making one-handed operation easier and quicker.

Flow Rate/GPM – The flow rate is the amount of water that the faucets release, in gallons, per minute. The standard faucet releases 2.2 gallons per minute (or GPM) and many newer faucets have water-saving features to help conserve water without reducing the effectiveness of the faucet.

WaterSense Certified – These faucets meet criteria set out by the EPA to ensure the faucet meets the high-performance, water-efficient standards that will help you reduce water use in your home and save you money over time. WaterSense certified faucets and accessories use 1.5 gallons of water per minute.

Includes escutcheon – An escutcheon is a decorative plate designed to augment the style of the faucet, as well as to cover any unused holes in the deck. For instance, if a single hole faucet is installed in a sink that has three holes, an escutcheon can be used to cover the preexisting, unused holes and can be sealed to prevent any water damage from occurring under the sink.
